Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani

Cellular Jail, popularly known as Kala Pani, is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in Port Blair and a powerful symbol of India’s freedom struggle. Built by the British between 1896 and 1906, this massive colonial prison was designed to isolate and punish Indian freedom fighters who opposed British rule. The jail gets its name “Cellular” because it was constructed with seven long wings radiating from a central watchtower, with hundreds of solitary confinement cells meant to break the spirit of prisoners.

Each cell was extremely small, poorly ventilated, and designed to prevent any communication between inmates. Many legendary freedom fighters such as Veer Savarkar were imprisoned here and subjected to inhuman treatment, including forced labor, physical torture, and severe punishments. Walking through the corridors today gives visitors a deep emotional experience and helps them understand the sacrifices made for India’s independence.

One of the major attractions here is the Light and Sound Show, held in the evening, which narrates the history of the jail and the stories of the freedom fighters through powerful audio-visual storytelling. The show is available in both Hindi and English and is highly recommended for all visitors.

Today, Cellular Jail stands as a National Memorial, attracting history lovers, students, and tourists from across the world. The museum inside displays photographs, documents, and artifacts related to the freedom movement, making it an educational and inspiring place to visit.
